Community Health Spotlight: Reaching the DMV Region

The DMV region is one of the most diverse metropolitan areas in the United States. From the historically Black neighborhoods of Anacostia and Prince George's County to the growing Latino communities of Northern Virginia, the region is home to a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and health experiences.

It is also a region where health disparities are stark. Residents of Ward 8 in Washington DC have life expectancies more than a decade shorter than residents of Ward 3 — just a few miles away. These disparities are not inevitable. They are the result of systemic inequities in access to healthcare, healthy food, safe housing, and yes — access to cutting-edge medical research.

Building Bridges, Not Just Recruiting

At DMV Clinical Trials, we don't believe in parachuting into communities to recruit participants and then leaving. We believe in building genuine, long-term partnerships with the organizations that communities already trust.

Over the past two years, we have partnered with more than 15 community organizations across the DMV region, including faith communities, community health centers, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and advocacy organizations focused on specific health conditions.

These partnerships are not transactional. We attend community health fairs, host educational workshops, and provide resources on health topics that matter to each community — regardless of whether it leads to trial enrollment.

Removing Barriers to Participation

We have also worked to identify and remove the practical barriers that prevent people from participating in research. These include:

**Transportation:** We provide transportation assistance for participants who cannot easily reach our facility.

**Language:** Our staff includes speakers of Spanish, Amharic, and French, and we work with certified medical interpreters for other languages.

**Scheduling:** We offer evening and weekend appointments for participants who cannot take time off work.

**Trust:** We acknowledge the historical reasons why communities of color may be skeptical of medical research, and we work to earn trust through transparency, respect, and consistent follow-through.

The Road Ahead

We are proud of the progress we have made, but we know there is much more work to do. Our goal is to make DMV Clinical Trials the most trusted and accessible clinical research site in the region — a place where every resident of the DMV feels welcome, respected, and empowered to contribute to the future of medicine.
